Is Toptal worth it? What Toptal says, what reviewers say, and when to choose something else
Toptal is worth it when you need a senior, pre-screened specialist quickly, have the budget for it, and want Toptal to handle the matching. It's harder to justify for long-term roles on a tight budget, because you keep paying Toptal for as long as the engagement runs. Public reviews from people who used Toptal are mixed: several praise the quality of the match, and others say they paid more than they expected.
This page sticks to two kinds of source: Toptal's own pages for facts about Toptal, and public reviews we could open and read, quoted word for word.
How does Toptal work, according to Toptal?
From Toptal's FAQ (toptal.com/faq):
- Screening. Toptal says it screens "for communication skills, personality, domain-specific knowledge, and a high level of professionalism." Applicants "complete a test project to demonstrate live proficiency."
- Matching. Toptal's own experts "hand-select the right match for you from our network." You don't search the network yourself.
- Subscription. "We have a flat monthly subscription fee of $79 that is charged if you decide to proceed with talent matching through Toptal."
- Billing. "We typically invoice our clients twice a month," on Net 10 terms.
- If it isn't working at the start. Toptal says that if you're not completely satisfied at the start of an engagement, "you won't be billed," and it can introduce another expert.
- Full-time hires. Asked whether you can hire a Toptal worker full-time, Toptal answers "For the most part, yes," and says it will work out an arrangement with you.
Toptal doesn't publish its hourly rates on these pages. You find out what a specific expert costs during matching.
What do people who used Toptal say?
These are public posts we opened and read.
Positive. Toptal's own client reviews page includes this testimonial: "The developers I was paired with were incredible -- smart, driven, and responsive. It used to be hard to find quality engineers and consultants. Now it isn't." (Toptal client reviews).
Mixed. A founder who posted on Indie Hackers after hiring through Toptal for a streaming project wrote: "The project was completed in 3 months when the ETA was 30 days. In total ended up spending around $25,000 dollars. YES, I know I over paid. No, I would not use Toptal again. YES, I am happy with the result." (Indie Hackers)
Cost and availability. A startup founder who tried Toptal wrote on Reddit's r/SaaS that "the developers on Toptal aren't that affordable for someone like me who is working on a SaaS startup and needs an affordable developer for a short while," and that "it's quite challenging to find someone who is available for an immediate short-term project." (r/SaaS)
Taken together, the pattern is consistent: people tend to like the quality of the match and dislike the price for longer or budget-sensitive work.
How do I decide if Toptal is worth it for my role?
- Estimate how long you'll need the developer. For a short, high-stakes piece of work, paying for Toptal's matching can be worth it. For a role that lasts years, an ongoing rate adds up.
- Ask Toptal for the full cost before you start. The $79 monthly subscription is separate from what you pay for the expert's time, so get both in writing.
- Decide who you want doing the screening. Toptal's experts pick the match for you. If you'd rather see the evidence and sort candidates yourself, a self-serve marketplace fits better.
- Check what you can see before you interview. With Toptal, you rely on Toptal's screening. Elsewhere, you may be able to see proctored test results first.
- Compare against a one-time fee. Work out what the same developer would cost over a year with an ongoing rate versus a one-time hiring fee. Success fee vs hourly markup shows the math.
How does Toptal compare with a self-serve marketplace like Arca.ph?
On Arca.ph, pay is quoted per month, up to about $3,000 a month. A developer paid $3,000 a month earns $36,000 in the first year, so the fee is $5,400, once. If you'd rather Arca.ph run the search, Done-for-you is 35% of first-year pay, charged once on hire. See Arca.ph pricing.
Who should pick which?
Choose Toptal if you need a senior specialist for a short or critical project, you want someone else to pick the match, and cost is a secondary concern.
Choose a self-serve marketplace like Arca.ph if the role is long-term, you want to see proctored evidence before you interview, and you'd rather pay one fee once than pay a margin every month.
