Fees below are quoted from each company's own page, or from a published article named in the row, checked on Oct 29, 2026. Each figure has a link and that date. If a page does not print a price, the cell says not published. Terms change, so check before you sign.

How much developer hiring platforms charge

A client service fee is a percentage added to what you pay a freelancer. A subscription is a monthly charge. A prepaid subscription means you pay for hours before they are worked. A placement fee is a percentage of pay, charged when someone is hired. A markup is an amount added to a developer's pay for as long as a firm bills you. Those are different bills. This page does not turn them into one winner.

Arca.ph is a private, invite-only network of remote engineers. Your AI agent, such as Grok, Claude, or ChatGPT, searches and sorts that network and builds a shortlist. Arca.ph cuts out the staffing-agency middleman. Profiles are free to view. On the marketplace, a one-time 15% fee of first-year pay is charged only on hire, with a 3-month free replacement. There is no subscription, retainer, or upfront fee. You hire and pay the developer directly (pricing).

Arithmetic on one example

A developer at $3,000 a month is $36,000 of first-year pay. This $3,000 is the illustration used on the pricing pages. It is not a salary survey. The lines below are arithmetic on that illustration, except the paragraph that says the numbers are Matt Watson's example. They are not invoices.

  • Arca.ph: 15% of $36,000 is $5,400, once, only if you hire.
  • Upwork's 5% Basic card, applied to $36,000 of payments: $1,800. Upwork's own example stays a $100 contract costing $105, plus a contract initiation fee.
  • Upwork's 7.99% Basic answer, applied to the same $36,000: $2,876.40. The pricing page also publishes this rate, so 5% is not the only Basic number.
  • Upwork's 10% Business Plus card, applied to $36,000: $3,600. Upwork's own example stays a $100 contract costing $110, plus a contract initiation fee.
  • Those Upwork lines leave out the contract initiation fee. Upwork publishes that fee as a range from $0.99 to $14.99, not as one number.
  • Toptal's $79 subscription for 12 months: $948. That is the subscription only. It is not a talent rate.
  • Arc.dev's 20% of $36,000: $7,200. The hire FAQ also says a first full-time hire is pay-what-you-want, and the terms allow a fixed fee of USD 30,000 if Arc cannot get the offer letter. 20% is not the only public statement.
  • A contingent recruiting fee of 20% to 25% of $36,000: $7,200 to $9,000. A retained fee of 30% to 35% is $10,800 to $12,600. Arithmetic on the percentages SHRM quoted. SHRM did not print these dollars.

Matt Watson's example, not the illustration above and not a rate card, is a $3,000 monthly salary with a 30 percent margin, a $900 fee that month. If pay in his example rises to $3,500, the fee rises to $1,050. That fee is charged again the next month.

For a long engagement, a one-time fee and a percentage of every payment are different bills. How to compare a one-time fee with an ongoing markup is in Staffing agency markup rates: how to hire your developer directly.

How Arca.ph differs

Arca.ph is a private, invite-only network of remote engineers. Your AI agent, such as Grok, Claude, or ChatGPT, searches and sorts that network and builds a shortlist. You choose who to meet. Profiles are free to view (how it works). When you want proof, you can ask for proctored tests a real person watches (proctored tests).

On the marketplace, the fee is a one-time 15% of first-year pay, charged only if you hire someone Arca.ph introduced. There is a 3-month free replacement. You hire and pay the developer directly. There is no subscription, retainer, or upfront fee (pricing).

If you need help: the Arca.ph team can run the search. That fee is 35% of first-year pay, charged once on hire. You hire and pay the talent directly. On the $36,000 illustration above, 35% is $12,600. There is a 3-month free replacement.

Left out on purpose

  • Turing. On Oct 29, 2026, turing.com did not return a page this check could read. Published hourly estimates disagree with each other, so this page does not print one.
  • Upwork service fees that the pricing page limits to clients in one place. The 5% and 7.99% Basic figures, and the 10% Business Plus figure, stay. The limited rates do not.
  • A salary average on Toptal's developers page that is attributed to another publisher. Toptal does not publish its own talent rate there, so that average is not used as a Toptal price.
  • An hourly floor in the Full Scale article. This page uses the 30 to 50 percent markup he states, not that floor.
  • A year of Lemon.io hours. Lemon.io does not publish that total, and this page does not multiply an hourly band by 160 hours or by a year.
  • Conditions in Arc.dev's terms about how long after an introduction the placement fee can apply. This page quotes the 20% fee, the USD 30,000 alternative, and the invoice timing, and links the terms for the rest.
  • A full-time percentage sometimes attributed to Gun.io in other writeups. It is not on gun.io or gun.io/pricing, so it is not used.
  • Pass rates and headcounts. They are not prices.

FAQ

How much do developer hiring platforms charge?

They do not all charge the same way. Upwork's plan cards list a 5% client service fee on Basic and a 10% fee on Business Plus, and another answer on that page lists 7.99% on Basic (upwork.com/pricing/client). Toptal's FAQ lists a flat monthly subscription of $79 if you proceed with talent matching, and Toptal does not publish a talent rate (toptal.com/faq). How much does Toptal charge to hire a developer?

Toptal's FAQ says it charges a flat monthly subscription fee of $79 if you decide to proceed with talent matching, and that you may cancel at any time. Its why page lists a recruiting fee of $0 (toptal.com/why). Its developers page says the cost depends on the project, seniority, and whether the engagement is hourly, part-time, or full-time, and it does not publish a talent rate (toptal.com/developers). What fees does Upwork charge clients?

Upwork's upwork.com/pricing/client says it is free to get started and that you pay when you hire. The Basic plan card lists a 5% service fee. Its example is that a $100 contract would cost $105, plus a contract initiation fee. The Business Plus plan card lists a 10% service fee. Its example is that a $100 contract would cost $110, plus a contract initiation fee. Another answer on that page says the Basic Marketplace fee is 7.99%, so 5% is not the only Basic number there. The page also publishes lower rates for some clients. Those rates are left out here because the page limits them to clients in one place. Contract initiation fees range from $0.99 to $14.99 per contract. Business Plus has no initiation fee except on fixed-price contracts of $100 or less, where a one-time fee of up to $4.99 can apply. Its arc.dev/terms set the fee at 20% of the candidate's first year's full-time annual compensation, and they allow a fixed fee of USD 30,000 if Arc cannot get the offer letter. Lemon.io's lemon.io says the minimum is 160 hours and that there are no upfront recruitment or setup fees. Payment is typically one month in advance. Its billing page lists typical hourly rates from $60 to $90 an hour. Its comparison page lists an agreed rate of $55–$120 an hour. This page does not treat those bands as one number, and it does not multiply either band by 160. Checked Oct 29, 2026.

Not on the pages checked. Andela's andela.com/pricing asks for contact information and does not print a dollar figure. Gun.io's gun.io homepage does not print a price, and gun.io/pricing shows that same homepage. Checked Oct 29, 2026.
