How does Upwork work?

Upwork is a marketplace where clients post work and hire freelancers. Its client pricing page says "It's free to get started—pay only when you hire" (upwork.com/pricing/client). The same page publishes more than one Basic fee. The plan cards and one FAQ answer are quoted separately below. This page does not treat them as one number.

  • Basic fee: the plan card lists "5%" service fee. "For example, a $100 contract would cost $105 in total + contract initiation fee" (upwork.com/pricing/client). Another answer on that page says "you pay a 7.99% Marketplace fee" on Basic. The "How does Upwork make money?" answer says clients pay "5% on Basic and 10% on Business Plus."
  • Business Plus fee: the plan card lists "10%" service fee. "For example, a $100 contract would cost $110 in total + contract initiation fee." Business Plus is free to join and "runs on a 30-day membership cycle" (upwork.com/pricing/client).
  • Contract initiation fee: "The fee ranges from $0.99 to $14.99 per contract" and is charged when you make the first payment or fund the first milestone (upwork.com/pricing/client). The help article says the same range, once per new contract. Clients on Business Plus are not charged that fee on hourly contracts. For fixed-price contracts, it applies to contracts of $100 USD or less (Contract Initiation Fee). The pricing page says a one-time fee of up to $4.99 USD applies to new Business Plus contracts under $100 USD (upwork.com/pricing/client).
  • Other published fees: "Each active direct contract is billed at $49/month per active contract." The same answer says talent pays a service fee "ranging from 0% to 15% per contract" (upwork.com/pricing/client).
  • Who picks: clients browse profiles, ratings, and work history. Basic includes 30 invites per job post. Business Plus includes 60, plus "a curated shortlist of top applicants to your job post in under 6 hours" from Uma, Upwork's hiring agent. Direct messages are 5 per day on Basic and 15 per day on Business Plus (upwork.com/pricing/client).
  • Pool: "Connect with 18+ million freelancers across 180 countries on Upwork." The page also says "Trusted by 800,000 clients" (upwork.com/pricing/client).
  • Vetting: "Upwork verifies every freelancer's identity and location before you connect." Business Plus lists Expert-Vetted talent and says those freelancers and agencies are rigorously screened for both technical expertise and soft skills. Talent badges mark freelancers who deliver strong results (upwork.com/pricing/client). The trust page says identity verification "confirms that badged independent professionals are who they say they are with an identification document review and video call," and that clients can use feedback and the Job Success Score (upwork.com/trust-and-safety/clients).
  • If it does not work out: "Protected payments—only pay for approved work from escrow." "Only pay for work that meets your agreed terms. If you run into an issue, Upwork's protection policies and dispute support have you covered" (upwork.com/pricing/client). The trust page says fixed-price escrow lets you review finished work before releasing payment, and that hourly contracts include a Work Diary so you pay only for time worked. It also says Upwork provides dispute resolution assistance (upwork.com/trust-and-safety/clients). Those pages do not state a free replacement period.

Upwork is often the better choice when you want an open freelance marketplace, proposals from many freelancers, and payment protection on each contract. For a short engagement, a percentage of the payment can cost less than a fee on a year of pay. Upwork publishes the percentage and the $100 examples. It does not publish one project total.

Why do people look for Upwork alternatives?

The common reasons are:

  • Cost over a long hire. The client service fee applies to payments for as long as the contract runs. For a long-term role, a one-time fee can cost less. (See Success fee vs hourly markup for the math.)
  • Who sorts the profiles. Upwork is an open list, and Uma can shortlist. Some buyers want a network of remote engineers searched by an assistant they already use. Ask Grok Bot to search Arca.ph. Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants can search and sort the same profiles.
  • What happens after the hire. Upwork describes escrow and paying through its platform. Some buyers would rather arrange the contract and pay with the developer.

How does Arca.ph compare?

Model: a network of vetted remote software engineers from around the world.

  • Free candidate data: resume, self-reported English level, desired pay, the hours they can work, a personality test, screening answers and an AI video interview (arca.ph/pricing). Profiles are free to view once you sign up and sign the Arca.ph Client Agreement (terms).
  • Proof, if you want it: human-proctored tests are optional and charged per test. They include an English test, a thinking-skills test, a coding test with no AI, a typing test, a 2-hour build where AI is allowed, and a live pair-programming session (the Fire Drill). You pay for the tests you order (arca.ph/proctored-tests).
  • Introductions: Arca.ph contacts a candidate only when you ask, and introduces you only if the candidate agrees.
  • Fee: On the marketplace, a one-time 15% success fee of first-year pay, charged only if you hire a candidate Arca.ph introduced, within 1 year of the introduction. 3-month free replacement guarantee (arca.ph/pricing).
  • After the hire: on the marketplace, you arrange the contract and pay with the developer.
  • Ask Grok Bot to search Arca.ph. Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants can search and sort this network of remote engineers too. Arca.ph doesn't shortlist (how it works).

Good fit if: you're hiring a developer long-term, you want every candidate's details and test results in front of you, sorted by Grok Bot, Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant, and you'd rather pay once than pay a percentage of every invoice.

Not the best fit if: you want a short freelance contract with escrow, or you want a large open marketplace of proposals. On the marketplace, after the hire you arrange the contract and pay with the developer.

Which should I choose?

  • A short freelance contract, with proposals and escrow: Upwork.
  • A full-time hire with one fee, and every profile sorted by Grok Bot, Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant: Arca.ph, on the marketplace.
  • Proof a developer can code without AI help: Arca.ph offers a proctored no-AI coding test you can order. Upwork describes identity checks, a Job Success Score, and Expert-Vetted screening.

Is Arca.ph cheaper than Upwork?

It depends on how long you pay the freelancer. Upwork's client pricing page lists a 5% Basic fee, and its example is that a $100 contract costs $105 plus a contract initiation fee. Business Plus lists 10%, and a $100 contract costs $110 plus a contract initiation fee (upwork.com/pricing/client). Another answer on that page says the Basic fee is 7.99%, so 5% is not the only number there. The fee applies to payments for as long as the contract runs. On the marketplace, Arca.ph charges one 15% fee of first-year pay if you hire, plus any proctored tests you choose to order. A developer at $3,000 a month is $36,000 for the first year, so the one-time 15% fee on the marketplace is $5,400. For a long-term role, a one-time fee often costs less over time; for a few weeks of work, it usually won't. Our success fee vs hourly markup explainer shows how to work out the break-even point with your own numbers.
